E.K.B. Books is now offering copyediting and proofreading services for indie authors! Learn more below, and use the contact form for any questions, to request a sample edit, or to book a service.
In copyediting, the copy is tidied up for conciseness and polished so that information is clearly delivered to the reader.
This happens after developmental edits (not offered).
Proofreading is to catch lingering errors in the copy
and correct inconsistencies relating to interior formatting.
This happens after copyedits (offered) and formatting (not offered).
During the copyediting stage, E.K.B. Books will read closely and edit for the following:
Edits will be made in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster Dictionary unless requested otherwise.
Copyediting focuses on individual sentences and paragraphs; it involves a detailed look at their structure and clarity, and an overall technical review to aid readability.
NOTE: You should only hire a copyeditor after your book has gone through developmental editing and rewrites. If there’s a chance you’ll cut out chapters, add new text, or tinker with certain passages — don’t get a copyeditor yet!
$25 deposit & $0.004/word.
During the proofreading stage, E.K.B. Books will meticulously comb through the book to see if the copyeditor has missed anything or if the formatting has accidentally introduced a mistake into the text. In addition to typos, this may include checking for the following:
Edits will be suggested in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster Dictionary unless requested otherwise.
Proofreading is the editorial "safety net" and the last line of defense before your book goes to print. It is an in-depth search for any lingering technical errors and a review of the formatting for consistency and an overall polishing.
NOTE: You should only hire a proofreader after developmental & copyedits have been completed. Proofreading can be done before formatting, but it's advisable to have the formatted book proofed for formatting inconsistencies as well!

"I hired Erin to help me with copy editing for my second book. Trusting your creative work with someone new is always really scary, but right from the start, I knew that as a writer herself, Erin innately understood what it's like and she was just as invested in the success of the manuscript as I was. The best editors step in when needed and let the rest of the story speak for itself, which is exactly what she did with The Memory Curse. She even went above and beyond, catching a couple of minor plot points and a map/location error that might have confused readers. Her revisions made my manuscript shine and were delivered on time and with kindness. I will definitely be working with her again."
"Erin is an amazing proofreader with an eye for details and language. She offered suggestions that elevated my writing and found enough typos/errors that made me grateful I hired a proofreader at all, but especially that I hired Erin. 10/10 will work with her again and although I'm tempted to tell no one about her so she's never too busy for me, I also want to tell every indie author about her because she is a GEM. It can be scary to take a chance on someone new, but wow this paid off."
"Erin is a true pleasure to work with. She’s a wonderful collaborator through the proofread process, which is one of the most important things to me when working with an editor. Her communication is fast and she always addresses everything I’ve asked. She’s very meticulous in her editing, and that gives me confidence to turn my book over to the hands of my readers. Not only is she a phenomenal editor, she is a huge cheerleader. Having a proofreader who not only does a fantastic job but also encourages me is truly the full package. I can always trust her to catch every little detail and produce quick turnaround, along with hand-in-hand communication. I will gladly be booking her for every proofread!"
